Ever think where to go for a short get away? Tired of staying at chain hotels? Why not try out a bed and breakfast for a change of pace!
There are many Denver area bed and breakfasts to choose from. They range from ma and pa style that are more of a room rented in a house (you may or may not share a bathroom), to a Victorian style that is filled with antiques, doilies and quilts, to a modern style, to “hotel style” that offers the best of both worlds. If you have never stayed at a bed and breakfast before, you might want to find a hotel style one so your stay is more predictable. Hotel style B&B’s offer amenities of both a hotel and a bed and breakfast so you are more likely to enjoy your stay.
Staying at a bed and breakfast includes breakfast. Some properties serve a continental breakfast like they do in Europe (pastries, juice, fruit and coffee) and others serve a hot breakfast like you would receive at a restaurant. Some even serve a multi course gourmet breakfast. When staying at a hotel, a hot breakfast is usually an additional charge. Getting hungry?
Bed and breakfast rooms are typically a bit smaller than hotel rooms. After all, they are a room in someone’s house. They are usually individually decorated and host more amenities. Hotel style bed and breakfasts offer things that a hotel has like flat screen tv’s, cable tv, mini fridges, coffee makers, phones and private bathrooms. They also include bed and breakfast features like an included breakfast, personal service, individual decorating, afternoon snacks, views, fireplaces, private hot tubs or Jacuzzis, plush beds, free parking, free Wi-Fi. Some even have a restaurant and bar on site.
Usually a bed and breakfast is run by the innkeepers who wear many hats. They do everything from taking reservations, cooking breakfast, cleaning rooms and doing laundry, maintenance and much more. It can be a tireless job. The good part is they get to meet nice people from around the world, they live where they work so they can write off many expenses and don’t have to fight traffic, and it will normally pay for all your living expenses (including the mortgage) and then some. The downside is that it is much harder work than people might think. Many people think running a bed and breakfast is like a big party. Hanging out with guests, sipping wine, listening to music and relaxing. While this does happen, it is more the exception than the rule. Innkeepers usually have very long and tiring days. Every day is different with a variety of problems that arise, being able to troubleshoot everything and have the house together, clean and ready to present by check in time. This can make for a stressful day. For instance, we had an air bed in one of the rooms that the pump quit working and the bed deflated. We managed to drive an hour to the bed store to pick up a new pump. When we installed it, the hose connector broke completely in half. We called the store and thankfully, they waited for us after they were already closed to drive down again and pick up a new bed bladder (bless them!). We got the bed back together just as the guests were checking in. Luckily this worked out ok even though it took up 5 hours of our day. You just have to roll with the punches when running a bed and breakfast. You never know what surprise will pop up next.
Things To Do
When staying at a Denver bed and breakfast, it would be wise to check out the surrounding area for things to do. Some bed and breakfasts are in remote areas and there is not much going on around them. Others are located near everything and you just have to choose what kind of activities you want to do each day. At the Arrowhead Manor, in Morrison Colorado, there are so many things to do it will make your head spin. Zip lining, fly fishing, wineries, concerts, water skiing, horseback riding, hiking and sightseeing are just a few. Make sure you check out restaurants in the area also. If you pre plan your meals it can save you a lot of headaches.
When setting up your dining plans at a Denver bed and breakfast, try to do a little research ahead of time. Some B&B’s don’t have dining near them, sometimes the restaurants close early, sometimes the restaurants are full. There are many restaurants around Arrowhead to choose from. Something for everyone. Gourmet sit down restaurants, sports bars, locals hang outs, fast food and more. Take a look at our extensive list of restaurants here.
Staying at a bed and breakfast can be a rewarding get away. Romantic, unique and memorable. If you have never stayed at one before, be sure to do some research beforehand. It is different then staying at a chain hotel. Chain hotels offer things like room service, 24 hour front desk, fitness center and usually a restaurant and bar. Most bed and breakfasts don’t offer these things. The luxurious Arrowhead Manor is the closest mountain facility to Denver (only 30 minutes to downtown denver). Gorgeous mountain views, private hot tubs, fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, more of a hotel style bed and breakfast.
